Structure

A full legion consists of 5,000 rank and file and several officers.

A legion is divided into 10 cohorts of 500.

Each cohort is divided into 5 centuria led by a centurion.

Each centuria is also divided into 10 decuria led by a decurion.

Senior Officers

The senior officers of the Legion are not assigned to cohorts. They are responsible for attending war councils and overall administration of the legion. In battle, they go where needed.

Legatus

The overall commander of the legion. Decorated with gold.

First Tribune

Second in command of the legion. Takes command if legatus dies. Decorated with silver and two stripes of gold.

Camp Prefect

Third in command of the legion. In charge of training the legion and commanding the auxiliaries. Decorated with silver and one stripe of gold.

Tribunes

Five tribunes serve as administrative officers. Decorated with silver.

Cohort Officers

These officers are assigned to cohorts and are responsible for leading and maintaining discipline among the legionnaires under them.

Centurions

50 centurions command units of 100 called centuria. Certain centurions also command their respective cohorts. Decorated with bronze.

Primus Pilus

The centurion of the first cohort’s first centuria. In battle, commands the whole cohort. Attends war councils with the senior officers. Decorated with bronze and two stripes of silver.

Pilus Prior

The centurions of the first centuria of each cohort beyond the first. In battle, they command their whole cohort. Decorated with bronze and one stripe of silver.

Optio

Second in command of a centuria. Responsible for enforcing the centurion’s orders and taking command in battle if the centurion falls. Decorated with red and two stripes of bronze.

Decurion

Commands a ten-person decuria. Responsible for maintaining discipline in the decuria. Decorated with red and one stripe of bronze.
