Darlatia

Rocky and mountainous, the province is difficult to traverse. Caves and tunnels are numerous here, whether natural or crafted.

Deep in the mountainous caverns of Darlatia, there is a breathtaking crystal formation known by many as The Heart. Dwarven historians attest that after The Unmaking, their people awoke surrounded by its majesty. Natives may refer to it as The Heart of the World, but most outsiders know it as The Heart of Darlatia.

For reasons unknown, reflections of the dead can be seen throughout the chamber where The Heart resides.

Groups of rock gnomes arrived in Darlatia in the early decades after the Unmaking. Fascinated by The Heart, they founded settlements of their own and were able to coexist peacefully with the native dwarves.

Many foreign rulers have taken interest in The Heart and attempted to annex Darlatia. Asterios of Minos, Philander of Drace, and the War-Consuls of Rathage all tried and failed to bring The Heart under their control. Lysander the Great was preparing to march into Darlatia after returning to Drace from his eastern campaigns, but he died before his plans could be realized.

Demetria, successor to the northwestern territories of the divided Achorosi Empire, proceeded with Lysander’s plans to invade Darlatia. She was initially successful, but the Darlatians forged an alliance with the Remians and repelled the invaders. This alliance was maintained and eventually lead to the Darlatians joining the Remian Republic as a new province when threatened by an expanding Rathaginian Empire.
